Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher who lived in ancient Athens (around 428–348 BCE). He was a student of the great thinker Socrates and later became a teacher himself.

'Plato' was actually a nickname meaning 'broad' or 'wide' — possibly referring to his wide shoulders or his broad forehead. His real name was Aristocles.
