💡 The Idea

In any right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (the longest side, opposite the right angle) equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Formula: a² + b² = c² (where c is the hypotenuse) Concrete example — the 3-4-5 triangle: 3² + 4² = 9 + 16 = 25 = 5² ✓ This means if you know two sides of a right triangle, you can always calculate the third: Missing hypotenuse: c = √(a² + b²) Missing leg: a = √(c² − b²) The relationship was known to Babylonian scribes as early as 1800 BCE (the clay tablet Plimpton 322 lists Pythagorean triples), and to Egyptian rope-stretchers who used 3-4-5 triangles to square building foundations. Indian mathematicians in the Sulbasutras (c. 800 BCE) stated similar rules. Pythagoras and his school in Croton are credited with the first known general proof — demonstrating that the rule holds for all right triangles, not just special integer cases.

Present Simple (facts & rules)

✏️ Try it

A ramp leads up to a stage. The horizontal distance from the base to the stage is 8 metres, and the ramp rises 6 metres vertically. How long is the ramp itself? Hint: draw the right triangle — horizontal = 8, vertical = 6, ramp = hypotenuse.
