The Fibonacci sequence starts: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144… Rule: each term = the sum of the two terms before it. F(n) = F(n−1) + F(n−2), with F(0) = 0 and F(1) = 1. Fibonacci introduced this sequence to Europe in his 1202 book Liber Abaci (Book of Calculation), using the rabbit-pair problem to illustrate it. The book also introduced Hindu-Arabic numerals (0–9) to replace clunky Roman numerals. Why does nature use Fibonacci numbers? When a plant grows new leaves, seeds, or petals from a central spiral, the most efficient packing angle is approximately 137.5° — the "golden angle." This angle naturally produces spirals whose counts are consecutive Fibonacci numbers. The golden ratio φ (phi) ≈ 1.6180339… As n grows large, F(n+1) ÷ F(n) → φ Example: 89 ÷ 55 ≈ 1.618, 144 ÷ 89 ≈ 1.618 Fibonacci numbers appear in: sunflower seed spirals (usually 34 and 55), pinecone scales (8 and 13), nautilus shell chambers, the branching of trees, and musical scales.
