A great teacher of mathematics and the stars

💡 The Idea

Hypatia's mathematical work centred on making earlier masterpieces accessible and precise. Diophantus's Arithmetica (3rd century CE): an early work on solving equations where the answers must be whole numbers or fractions — now called Diophantine equations. Example: find whole-number solutions to x² + y² = z² (the Pythagorean triples: 3-4-5, 5-12-13, …). Hypatia wrote a commentary that clarified and extended his problems. Apollonius's Conics: the geometry of curves made by slicing a cone — circles, ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas. These curves later described the orbits of planets (Kepler, 1609) and the paths of light through lenses. Hypatia's commentary made the work readable to later scholars. Ptolemy's Almagest: the foundational text of ancient astronomy, modelling the movements of the sun, moon, and planets. Hypatia helped revise her father's edition. Astrolabe: an instrument for measuring the angle of stars above the horizon — used to find latitude, local time, and direction. Hypatia contributed to its design. Hydroscope (hydrometer): a device that floats in liquid; the depth it sinks tells you the liquid's density. Still used today in brewing and medicine.
