Is one infinity bigger than another? A daring question

💡 The Idea

Cantor proved that not all infinities are the same size. The natural numbers {1, 2, 3, 4, …} are countably infinite (written |ℕ|, or ℵ₀ — "aleph-null"). You can list them in order, and any infinite set that can be matched one-to-one with this list has the same size. The real numbers — every point on a number line, including all decimals — are uncountably infinite (written |ℝ|). Cantor's diagonal argument proves this: 1. Assume someone hands you a complete numbered list of all real numbers between 0 and 1. 2. Look at the 1st digit of number 1, the 2nd digit of number 2, the 3rd digit of number 3, etc. — the "diagonal." 3. Change each diagonal digit (e.g. add 1, wrapping 9→0). You now have a new number. 4. This new number differs from every number on the list in at least one digit — so it cannot be on the list. 5. But it IS a real number between 0 and 1. Contradiction: the list was not complete. 6. No complete list can exist → the real numbers cannot be counted → |ℝ| > |ℕ|. There are infinitely many sizes of infinity. Cantor called them transfinite cardinal numbers.

Mixed Review & Big Ideas

✏️ Try it

Use Cantor's diagonal argument idea to answer: why can't you make a complete list of all decimal numbers between 0 and 1? Write your answer in 3–4 sentences, using at least one modal verb (can, cannot, must, will) and one comparative (bigger, larger, more). Bonus: Is the set of even numbers {2, 4, 6, 8, …} countably or uncountably infinite? Explain in one sentence.
