How a stick and a shadow measured the whole world

💡 The Idea

Eratosthenes' method rests on two facts: the Sun is so far away that its rays reach Earth essentially in parallel lines; and the Earth is a sphere. On the summer solstice (c. 21 June), at solar noon: • In Syene (modern Aswan): a vertical stick casts no shadow — the Sun is directly overhead (90° elevation). • In Alexandria, ~800 km due north: a vertical stick casts a shadow at an angle of about 7.2° from vertical. Because the Sun's rays are parallel, the 7.2° difference between the two sticks equals the arc angle between the two cities on the Earth's surface. 7.2° is 1/50 of a full circle (360° ÷ 7.2° = 50). Eratosthenes knew the north-south distance between the cities was ~5,000 stadia (the standard Greek unit; 1 stadion ≈ 157–185 m). Circumference = 50 × 5,000 stadia = 250,000 stadia ≈ 39,375–46,250 km. The modern accepted value is ~40,075 km. Eratosthenes' result is remarkably close — an error of under 2% using only geometry, a stick, and a shadow.

✏️ Try it

On the same day at noon, a stick in City A casts no shadow. A stick in City B, which is 3,000 kilometres due north, casts a shadow at 6° from vertical. (a) What fraction of a full circle is 6°? (b) Using Eratosthenes' method, calculate the circumference of this planet. (c) Is your answer larger or smaller than Earth's actual circumference of ~40,075 km?
