💡 The Idea
When you put an object in water, it pushes the water out of the way. The amount of water pushed aside equals the volume — the space in 3D — that the object occupies. This is called water displacement. Pure gold is denser than silver. Equal weights of pure gold and gold-silver alloy are not the same size: the alloy is larger because silver is less dense and needs more space for the same mass. Archimedes placed the crown in water and measured how much water it displaced. Then he placed a lump of pure gold of the same weight in water. The crown displaced more water than the pure gold — proof that the crown was larger in volume and therefore less dense, meaning it contained cheaper silver mixed in. Formula: Volume of object = Volume of water displaced. Modern form: Density = Mass ÷ Volume (ρ = m / V)

You place a small rock into a measuring cup filled with water. The water level rises from 200 ml to 215 ml. What is the volume of the rock? Bonus: If the rock weighs 54 grams, what is its density? (Density = mass ÷ volume)
