X-planes are very expensive. Building one takes many years. Many scientists and engineers work on each plane. The plane flies only a few times. Then the Air Force learns from it. So one X-plane costs millions of dollars.

Drones are different. A company can build a new drone in just months. If it does not work well, they can build a new one. The cost is much lower. So the military can test more ideas faster.

Some people think X-planes are no longer important. "Drones can do the same work," they say. "Why spend so much money on X-planes?" But other people disagree. They say X-planes still teach us new things. X-planes can fly faster. They can carry heavier things. They can go higher than drones.

The real answer is probably both. Maybe the U.S. Air Force will use more drones. But it will also keep building some X-planes. Each tool does different work.
