Data centres could use less power by switching to light cables
AI가 레벨별로 작성한 세계 뉴스 · World news, written by AI at each level
Did you know that a data centre uses as much power as a small city? Big companies like Google and Facebook run millions of computers. These computers need to talk to each other very fast. Right now, they use copper wires to send information. But copper wires make heat. Heat means more air conditioning. More air conditioning means more power bills.
Here is the fun part: light is much faster than electricity in wires. Light travels through special glass tubes called fiber optic cables. When you use light instead of copper, less heat happens. Less heat means you need less cooling. Less cooling means you save a lot of money.
Companies are testing this new idea right now. Some data centres have already started using light technology. The technology is not totally new. But now it is cheaper and easier to use. This means more companies can try it.
The change will not happen overnight. Old copper systems work fine. Companies need time to make the switch. But the future looks bright—literally! Using light could cut power use by 10 to 20 percent. That is huge for big data centres.
What do you think? Should all data centres use this light technology? Or should we wait for something even better?
