9월 26일 뜨는 추수달, 지구 대기의 착각 효과

Have you ever noticed that some full Moons look bigger and brighter than others? The answer is actually quite simple—and September 2026 gives you the perfect chance to see one of nature's most impressive monthly shows.

The Harvest Moon is the full Moon that arrives closest to the autumn equinox. In the Northern Hemisphere, this happens in September. What makes it special is not that it is literally larger than other full Moons—this is a common misconception. Instead, the Harvest Moon rises at a shallow angle above the horizon. This angle means the Moon spends more time near the horizon, where Earth's atmosphere makes it appear larger and more golden or orange. This optical effect has captivated people for thousands of years.

On Saturday, September 26, 2026, the Harvest Moon will rise. If you want to observe it clearly, location matters significantly. Astronomers predict that southern and eastern regions of the United Kingdom will experience the best viewing conditions. These areas should enjoy clear, dark skies with minimal cloud cover. If you live elsewhere in the UK, you may still see the Moon, but clouds or atmospheric interference could reduce visibility.

The timing of moonrise varies depending on where you are. In the UK, the Harvest Moon will typically rise in the early evening hours. This is different from other full Moons, which often rise around the same time each night. The Harvest Moon rises earlier on consecutive nights because of its shallow angle. This pattern earned it the name "Harvest Moon"—farmers in earlier centuries used this predictable light to work their fields longer into the evening during the crucial harvest season.

To see the Harvest Moon best, find a location away from city lights and tall buildings. If you have binoculars or a telescope, they can reveal fine details on the Moon's surface. However, the naked eye is perfectly adequate for enjoying its beauty. The Harvest Moon will be visible for several hours after it rises, so you do not need to rush. Simply look toward the eastern horizon as the Sun sets, and wait for the Moon to emerge.

Did you know that the Harvest Moon's golden color comes partly from how light passes through more atmosphere when the Moon is low in the sky? This is the same reason the Sun appears orange at sunset. Your own location and weather will shape your experience, but the Moon itself will be the same spectacular sight everywhere on Earth.

Which part of the UK are you in—or if you are not in the UK, where will you be in September 2026? Do you think you will try to see it?
