What if you found the bones of an animal that nobody had ever seen before? That is what Dorothea Bate did — many times.

Dorothea was a scientist who lived more than 100 years ago. She loved to study old bones and rocks. Other people did not always take her seriously because she was a woman. But she did not stop. She worked hard and found many new fossil animals.

One of her most famous discoveries was a tiny elephant. It was very small — much smaller than elephants today. She also found an animal called myotragus. This animal looked like a goat mixed with an antelope. Nobody knew this animal existed before Dorothea found its bones.

Dorothea traveled to many places to dig for fossils. She went to islands and caves. She carefully studied every bone she found. Her work helped scientists understand how animals change over millions of years.

Recently, her city put a blue plaque on a building to honor her. A blue plaque is a special sign. It means someone important lived or worked there. This plaque tells people about Dorothea and her amazing discoveries. Young girls who love science can see it and feel inspired.

Dorothea showed us something important: good ideas can come from anyone. She did not give up. She believed in her work. Today, scientists still use what she learned. She changed the way we study the past.

Did you know that many ancient animals were very different from animals today? What would you want to discover if you were a fossil hunter?
