Dolly Parton sends free books to millions of children every month

Imagine a child opens a mailbox and finds a surprise—a brand new book, just for them. This happens every month for millions of kids around the world, and one woman made it possible.

Dolly Parton is a famous country music singer. But she is also a teacher. In 1995, she started something special called the Imagination Library. The idea was simple: send free books to children every month. She wanted every child to love reading, even if their family had no money.

How does it work? Parents can sign up their children for free. Then, each month, a new book arrives at their home. The books are colorful and fun. They teach stories and ideas. Children get excited when the mailman comes.

Parton paid for everything at first. She spent her own money. Today, many people help. Companies and other kind people donate money. The library now sends books to children in the United States, Canada, Australia, and other countries.

Families share amazing stories. One mother said her shy daughter started to talk more after reading books from the library. Another parent said their son wanted to read every single day. Teachers say they see children who are better readers and better thinkers.

Did you know that children who read early learn faster in school? Parton knew this was important. She did not just want to give books. She wanted to build readers. She wanted to build dreamers.

Today, over 400 million books have been sent through the Imagination Library. Children in poor neighborhoods get the same books as rich children. Everyone gets the same gift.

Parton says reading changed her life. She grew up in a small, poor town in Tennessee. Books took her to new worlds. Now she gives that same gift to others.

What would your child's favorite book be? Think about how you felt when you first loved to read. Parton wants every child to feel that magic too.
