Have you ever seen a rock that looks like a bridge? One very famous rock bridge in Hawaii just disappeared.
The Hōlei Sea Arch was a special rock formation. It stood in Hawaii's Volcanoes National Park. The arch was made of dark volcanic rock. Visitors loved to see it and take photos. For 550 years, this rock bridge stood strong.
But last weekend, something changed. The arch crumbled and fell into the ocean. Nobody was hurt. The rock simply broke apart and disappeared.
Why did this happen? Scientists say the ocean is very powerful. Waves hit the rocks every day. Salt water slowly eats away the stone. Wind and rain also break rocks over time. All these forces work together. After many years, even strong rocks become weak.
This is completely normal. Rock formations near the ocean do not last forever. Geologists knew this arch would fall someday. They studied it for many years. The Hōlei Sea Arch was already showing cracks and damage. The collapse was expected.
Now the arch is gone. But Hawaii still has many other beautiful rock formations. Scientists will keep watching the cliffs. They want to understand how rocks change and break. This helps us learn about our planet.
Have you ever visited a place where rocks or nature looked very different than before? Things in nature are always changing—sometimes fast, sometimes slow. What natural places have you seen change in your own life?
