Thousands of ants grow wings and fly during summer

Have you ever seen thousands of ants flying in the air? That unusual moment has a fun name: Flying Ant Day. But here is the interesting part—it is not really one day.

Flying Ant Day happens many times during summer. It is not on the same day each year. When the weather becomes hot and very humid, something special happens to certain ants. Young male and female ants grow wings. Then they fly up into the air together.

Why do ants fly? The answer is simple: they want to start new homes. When ants fly, they leave their old colony. They fly to find other ants from different colonies. Young males and females meet in the air. After they meet, they fall back to the ground. Then they start new ant families in new places.

This natural event happens because summer weather is warm and wet. Humidity is important. Without wet air, the ants stay in their homes. So Flying Ant Day is different everywhere. In some places, it happens in July. In other places, it may happen in August.

People sometimes see many ants on one day. They think "Oh, today is Flying Ant Day!" But the same event might happen again a few days later in a different town. Nature does not follow a calendar.

This event shows us something beautiful about nature. Ants have a plan. They work together. Young ants leave home to build new lives. Isn't that something we can understand?
