GTA 6 goes digital only, signals end of game discs

Imagine walking into a store to buy a video game, but finding nothing but empty shelves where the games used to be. This is becoming reality. Grand Theft Auto 6, one of the most popular game franchises in the world, will launch only as a digital download. No disc. No box. No physical copy sitting on a shelf.

This is a significant moment in gaming history. For decades, gamers bought physical copies of games. You could walk into a store, pick up a box, and take it home. But the industry is changing rapidly. GTA 6's digital-only launch suggests that physical game discs may be heading toward the same fate as CDs and DVDs.

Look at what happened to music and films first. Ten years ago, people still bought music CDs and movie DVDs regularly. Today, most people stream their music on Spotify or Apple Music. Movies come from Netflix, Disney+, or other streaming platforms. Physical media didn't disappear completely — but it became a niche choice for collectors and enthusiasts. Gaming appears to be following this exact pattern.

Why is this happening? The reasons are practical and financial. Digital downloads are cheaper for companies to distribute. There is no cost for printing, packaging, or shipping physical boxes. Storage and warehouse space is no longer needed. For players, downloading is convenient — you can start playing immediately without waiting for a delivery truck. Internet speeds have also improved significantly worldwide, making large downloads faster and more reliable than ever before.

But this shift raises important questions. What happens to people who like owning their games? What if internet connection becomes unavailable? Physical media is something you own outright. Digital purchases are often licenses that companies can control or revoke. Some gamers worry about losing access to their purchases if a platform shuts down or a company goes out of business. These concerns are worth taking seriously.

The change is not happening overnight everywhere. Some regions still prefer physical copies. Collectors still treasure game boxes as part of gaming culture. However, the trend is clear. The convenience of digital downloads, combined with lower costs for publishers, means more games will likely launch digitally first — or only digitally in the future.

Musicale retailers like HMV and Tower Records once dominated shopping districts. Now most have closed. Game stores may follow a similar path. This doesn't mean gaming is disappearing — it means how we access games is transforming. The game itself remains; only the way we buy and own it is changing.

So what do you think? Are you someone who misses the feeling of owning a physical game box, or does digital-only feel like the natural next step? Understanding how technology changes our habits helps us appreciate what we're gaining and what we might be losing.
