아마존 게이밍 리더, 콘솔 시대의 종말을 예측하다

Imagine playing the latest video game on your phone, tablet, or old laptop — without owning a gaming console at all. This future might not be so far away.

A leader at Amazon's gaming division recently shared an interesting prediction. He believes that gaming consoles will become less important in the coming years. The main reason? The cost of gaming hardware keeps rising. New consoles and graphics cards are extremely expensive. Not every player can afford them anymore.

Here's where streaming changes everything. Streaming means the game runs on powerful computers far away from you. These computers are in data centers owned by companies like Amazon, Microsoft, or Google. The game's images travel through the internet to your screen. You simply hold a controller and play. It's similar to how you watch Netflix or YouTube — the video comes to you, not the other way around.

This technology already exists. Companies have launched cloud gaming services in recent years. But adoption has been slow. The challenge is internet speed and reliability. If your internet connection is weak or unstable, the game might freeze or lag. That ruins the experience. In Korea, where internet is world-class, streaming could work beautifully. In other parts of the world, infrastructure still needs improvement.

But think about the benefits. A teenager in a remote village could play the same games as someone in a big city — if they have good internet. A student could play games on their school computer. A parent could enjoy games without buying expensive equipment. The barrier to entry drops dramatically.

There's another angle worth considering. Game developers and publishers love streaming. Why? Because they control the experience completely. They can update games instantly. They can track player behavior in detail. They can remove games from the service whenever they want. Ownership, in the old sense, becomes less relevant. Players don't own the game — they rent access to it.

So the future probably doesn't mean consoles disappear completely tomorrow. Instead, streaming will grow alongside traditional gaming. Some players will prefer the tactile experience of holding a real console controller in their hands. Others will embrace the convenience of cloud gaming. Both paths will exist, at least for now.

The real question isn't whether consoles will vanish — it's whether the gaming industry can make streaming fast enough, stable enough, and affordable enough for ordinary players. Technology is improving. Internet infrastructure is expanding. The pieces are falling into place.

What kind of gamer are you? Do you love owning physical hardware and collecting games, or does the idea of playing anything, anywhere, on any device sound more appealing to you?
