Imagine arriving by ship to New York in 1900, carrying everything you own in one bag. The first thing you see is the Statue of Liberty, a massive copper figure holding a torch over the harbour. For millions of immigrants, she was the first sign that they had arrived somewhere new, somewhere full of possibility.
