Has the American Dream always been available to everyone, or just to some?

Imagine arriving by ship to New York in 1900, carrying everything you own in one bag. The first thing you see is the Statue of Liberty, a massive copper figure holding a torch over the harbour. For millions of immigrants, she was the first sign that they had arrived somewhere new, somewhere full of possibility. The "American Dream" is the idea that anyone (no matter where they come from) can build a better life here through hard work. Your guide David was born in Brooklyn, the son of immigrants. He has seen this promise up close. But the dream has not always been open to everyone equally. For much of American history, some people were welcomed and others were turned away or held back. The Statue of Liberty holds the question open: Has America ever truly been the place it promised to be? What do you think?
