How did a small island become the centre of the world?

Step off the Tube at Westminster and Oliver is already talking about the weather. Not because he has nothing else to say:
. but because that is simply how things begin here. In Britain, the weather is not really about the weather. It is a polite way to connect with a stranger without saying anything too personal. Big Ben stands behind you: over 160 years old, solid, still ticking. The British like things that last. They also like things that don't make too much fuss. Oliver gestures at the grey sky and says, "Lovely day, isn't it?" He may or may not be joking. For a small, rainy island, Britain shaped an enormous amount of the modern world. How exactly did that happen?
