How did a desert fishing village become one of the most ambitious cities on Earth?

Sixty years ago, the land that is now Dubai had no paved roads, no skyscrapers, and a population smaller than a medium-sized Korean city. People lived by pearl diving and small-scale trade along the Gulf. Then oil arrived — and Dubai made a choice that was not obvious at all: it decided to become a hub rather than just a rich oil town. A hub for aviation, trade, tourism, and construction. The result is the Burj Khalifa: 828 metres of steel, glass, and ambition, opened in 2010.
