What can a thousand-year-old pyramid teach us about the limits of progress?

At the spring equinox, something remarkable happens at Chichén Itzá. The afternoon sun hits the north staircase of El Castillo at exactly the right angle, and a shadow moves down the steps like a serpent descending from the sky. The Maya did not stumble onto this effect:
