Picture a grand stone arch sitting in the middle of a no-man's-land, visible from both sides of a divided city, reachable from neither. That was the Brandenburg Gate for twenty-eight years — 1961 to 1989. Built in 1791 as a symbol of Prussian civic pride, it became the most powerful symbol in Germany not because of what it was, but because of what nobody could do with it: walk through it.
