Why did China spend a thousand years building a wall ;
did it actually work?

중국은 왜 천 년 동안 성벽을 쌓았을까요 — 그리고 실제로 효과가 있었을까요?

The Great Wall of China is not one wall. It is thousands of kilometres of walls, watchtowers, and fortifications built across many dynasties over roughly 2,000 years. The earliest sections were built not against northern nomads but against other Chinese kingdoms:
. but it didn't stop the Mongols or the Manchus. Often, the gates were opened by bribery rather than broken by force. So what was it really for? Maybe its greatest purpose was not military at all, but this: a statement. Here is where China ends. Here is where the outside world begins. Does a wall that big ever truly keep danger out — or does it just make a country feel safer?

만리장성은 하나의 벽이 아니에요. 약 2,000년에 걸쳐 여러 왕조에 지어진 수천 킬로미터의 성벽, 망루, 요새예요. 초기 구간은 북쪽 유목민이 아닌 다른 중국 왕국을 상대로 지어졌어요:
