Why did China spend a thousand years building a wall — and did it actually work?

중국은 왜 천 년 동안 성벽을 쌓았을까요 — 그리고 실제로 효과가 있었을까요?

The Great Wall of China is not one wall. It is thousands of kilometres of walls, watchtowers, and fortifications built across many dynasties over roughly 2,000 years. The earliest sections were built not against northern nomads but against other Chinese kingdoms — walls facing inward. When Qin Shi Huang unified China in 221 BC, he ordered those scattered walls connected into something larger. And then dynasty after dynasty kept adding, rebuilding, and extending. The Ming dynasty alone spent nearly 200 years reinforcing what you see today.

만리장성은 하나의 벽이 아니에요. 약 2,000년에 걸쳐 여러 왕조에 지어진 수천 킬로미터의 성벽, 망루, 요새예요. 초기 구간은 북쪽 유목민이 아닌 다른 중국 왕국을 상대로 지어졌어요 — 안쪽을 향한 성벽이었어요. 기원전 221년 진시황이 중국을 통일하면서 흩어진 성벽들을 연결해 더 큰 것으로 만들었어요. 그리고 왕조마다 계속 더하고, 다시 짓고, 확장했어요. 명나라 혼자서만 거의 200년 동안 오늘날 볼 수 있는 성벽을 보강했어요.
