📍 The Great Wall of China ·
“Where ancient walls meet modern ambition, and every step has a story behind it.”
🤔 Big Question
Why did China spend a thousand years building a wall ; did it actually work?
The Great Wall of China is not one wall. It is thousands of kilometres of walls, watchtowers, and fortifications built across many dynasties over roughly 2,000 years. The earliest sections were built not against northern nomads but against other Chinese kingdoms: . but it didn't stop the Mongols or the Manchus. Often, the gates were opened by bribery rather than broken by force. So what was it really for? Maybe its greatest purpose was not military at all, but this: a statement. Here is where China ends. Here is where the outside world begins. Does a wall that big ever truly keep danger out — or does it just make a country feel safer?
🧠 Thinking Lab
The Great Wall was built partly to define the boundary between "China" and the outside world. Korea has its own history of managing relationships with larger, more powerful neighbours — China, Japan, and more recently the United States and Russia. How do you think a small or medium-sized country should manage its borders and relationships with larger powers?
