Stand at the top of Corcovado and something clicks immediately: Rio already had the most dramatic backdrop on earth — jungle peaks, Atlantic beaches, a harbour big enough to swallow cities. All the statue had to do was show up. Christ the Redeemer opened in 1931 with arms spread wide, a gesture of welcome rather than power, and within a generation it was shorthand for an entire country.
