The Sydney Opera House almost didn't happen. In 1956, a Danish architect named Jørn Utzon entered rough sketches into an international competition — and the judges nearly threw them in the bin. One juror rescued them and declared them the winner. The design was stunning: concrete shells soaring over the harbour like sails, or maybe wings, or maybe something no one had a word for yet.
